Which size harness is right for my dog?

1. Gather Your Tools:
- Measuring Tape: Use a flexible, soft measuring tape (like the kind used for sewing). If you don’t have one, you can use a piece of string or ribbon and then measure it against a ruler.
- Pen and Paper: To jot down the measurements.
- Treats: To keep your dog calm and cooperative during the measuring process.
2. Measure the Girth (Chest):
- Find the Widest Part of the Chest: The girth is the most crucial measurement and is taken around the widest part of your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs.
- Wrap the Tape Around: Wrap the measuring tape around your dog’s chest, ensuring it’s snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit two fingers between the tape and your dog’s body.
- Record the Measurement: Write down the girth measurement. This is typically the most important number for selecting the right harness size.
3. Measure the Neck:
- Find the Base of the Neck: Some harnesses also require a neck measurement, especially if they have a collar-like component. Measure around the base of your dog’s neck, where the neck meets the shoulders (usually where the collar sits).
- Wrap the Tape: Wrap the measuring tape around the neck, again making sure it’s snug but comfortable.
- Record the Measurement: Write down the neck measurement.
4. Compare Measurements to Size Chart:
- Consult the Manufacturer’s Size Chart: Every brand has slightly different sizing, so compare your dog’s measurements to the size chart provided by the harness manufacturer. Look for the size that best matches your dog’s girth and neck measurements.
- Consider Adjustability: Many harnesses are adjustable, so if your dog’s measurements fall between sizes, choose the larger size and adjust the harness for a perfect fit.
5. Try On the Harness:
- Check the Fit: Once you receive the harness, try it on your dog. The harness should fit snugly without being too tight. You should be able to slide two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body.
- Observe Your Dog: Make sure your dog is comfortable and can move freely. Check for any signs of rubbing or irritation after a walk.
By following these steps, you can ensure that your dog’s harness fits properly, providing comfort and security during walks and other activities.
