How to care for your wax canvas bowls
Share
1. Regular Cleaning:
- After Each Use: Empty the bowl of any leftover water or food. If the bowl is only slightly soiled, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or soft sponge to remove dirt and debris.
- Deep Cleaning: If the bowl is heavily soiled or has absorbed strong odors, rinse it with lukewarm water. Use a mild, non-detergent soap if necessary, but avoid harsh chemicals that could strip the wax coating.
2. Drying:
- Air Dry: After cleaning, allow the bowl to air dry completely before folding or storing it. Avoid direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure can dry out the wax and cause the fabric to crack.
- Pat Dry: For quicker drying, pat the bowl with a dry towel, then let it air dry to remove any remaining moisture.
3. Rewaxing:
- Frequency: Over time, the wax coating on your bowl may wear off, especially with frequent use. To maintain its water-resistant properties, consider rewaxing the bowl every 6-12 months, depending on use.
- Rewaxing Process: To rewax, you'll need a bar of wax specifically designed for waxed canvas (like beeswax or paraffin). Gently heat the wax bar and rub it onto the bowl in an even layer. Use a hairdryer or heat gun to melt the wax into the fabric, then let it cool and set.
4. Storage:
- Fold Properly: When not in use, fold the bowl carefully to avoid creasing the waxed canvas. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent mold or mildew from forming.
- Avoid Compression: Do not store heavy items on top of the bowl, as excessive pressure can cause the fabric to lose its shape and damage the wax coating.
5. Handling Stains:
- Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the affected area. Avoid using too much water or soap, as this can affect the wax coating.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use bleach or strong detergents, as these can strip the wax and damage the fabric.
6. Reviving the Waxed Canvas:
- Rehydrate Dry Areas: If the waxed canvas starts to look dry or cracked, lightly rub a small amount of wax over the affected areas and heat it until it absorbs into the fabric.
- Buff for Shine: After rewaxing, you can buff the surface with a soft cloth to restore its luster.
By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your waxed canvas dog bowl remains functional, durable, and ready for many adventures with your pupper.
